Emerald Mountain Publishing (EMP) first published a climbers' guide to Cosumnes River "gorge" when guides at that time were out of print and nothing was available except for old hand-me-down copies. A later, more commercial guide supplanted it, although we still make it available. Also, EMP currently publishes an off-trail adventure-hiking guide (Crystal Classics) to the greater Desolation area, and areas along Highway 88.

An excerpt from one of the hikes: "This is one of my favorites, as it offers very mixed terrain, some route finding problems, some 3rd & 4th class climbing (bypass-able), and hiking to the top of a mountain via a long ridge. There are spectacular views on either side, very interesting geology, including granitics, quartzes, metavolcanics, and their mixtures, and little bushwhacking is encountered."
